The communities west of Ipswich are entering an exciting new period of growth, with major plans underway to guide the future of the Western Growth Corridor and strengthen historic centres such as Rosewood.
Encompassing Walloon, Thagoona and Rosewood, the Western Growth Corridor has been identified as one of Ipswich’s key growth areas and is expected to undergo significant change over the next two decades.
Ipswich City Council expects the corridor’s population to grow from around 10,000 people to more than 70,000, supported by new housing, infrastructure and community facilities.
Council is now developing a Western Growth Corridor Structure Plan to guide that expansion, including future housing, infrastructure, environmental conservation and community facilities.
One of the most exciting aspects is a new plan for the historic township of Rosewood.
Just a short drive west of Highland Walloon, Rosewood is an important local centre for residents across the region, offering shopping, schools, sporting facilities and community services.
Its continued growth and renewal will add to the services and amenity available to Highland residents as the wider region develops.
Rosewood has been selected for Ipswich City Council’s new Suburban Renewal program, which aims to revitalise local centres and improve amenity while retaining the qualities that make individual communities distinctive.
Council is currently preparing a Rosewood Place Plan covering the town centre, main street and community facilities, with local residents and businesses being invited to help determine priorities for its future.
The plan will consider opportunities spanning public spaces, community facilities, local business, heritage, arts and culture, with the aim of creating a shared vision and action plan for the heart of Rosewood.
Council describes Rosewood as being at a “pivotal moment strategically, economically and socially”, with the growth occurring throughout the surrounding corridor expected to create opportunities for greater investment and increased support for local businesses.
Importantly, the planning is intended to build on Rosewood’s existing character rather than replace it, preserving the qualities of one of the Ipswich region’s most historic towns while preparing it to serve a much larger community.
