There was plenty to celebrate on the Haigslea State School oval on Saturday 29 August as the local community came together to mark an incredible 150 years of education, memories and milestones.
The school’s 150th anniversary brought together current and former students, families, staff and local residents for a day of activities, conversations and shared memories to celebrate an important community milestone.
The celebration, supported by Highland Walloon developer Lennium Group, was an opportunity for people from different generations and backgrounds to gather and connect with others who have long-standing ties to the area.
The school oval came alive throughout the day with rides, sideshow entertainment, a petting zoo and face painting, along with market stalls and plenty of food for visitors to enjoy.
Haigslea State School opened on 12 July 1876 as Walloon Scrub State School. Its first teacher was Alfred Bell Kemp, who had arrived from England only a month earlier, while many of the school’s early students came from the district’s German settler families and spoke little English.
The school was renamed Kirchheim State School in 1884 before taking the name Haigslea State School in 1916. It has continued educating generations of local children through 150 years of significant change across the surrounding district.
Today, Haigslea State School remains a close-knit local primary school, with students enrolled from Prep to Year 6.
“We were very pleased to be a Gold Sponsor of Haigslea State School’s 150th anniversary and help the school community celebrate such a significant milestone,” said Lennium Group Development Director Ian Worthington.
“The school has been part of the district for generations, and occasions like this bring together longstanding local families and newer residents,” he said.
“As Highland Walloon continues to grow, we want to support the organisations and events that help our residents build strong connections with the wider community.”
